Tips for using microphones*
- point the microphone at what you want to hear
- point the microphone away from what you don't want to hear
- don't place the microphone near reflective surfaces
- use as few microphones as possible

I'm no expert, but I think rules 3 and 4 are superfluous. 1 and 2 say it all.
In a pinch, I suppose just Rule 1 would do.
