YEAH, UH, SURE

Another example of how there really aren't any bugbears involved in war profiteering.

As soon as you read the words 'Cayman Islands' you know something smells....

Yes, the Cayman Isalnds are a group of Islands in the Carribean. There's not much going on there. Grand Cayman, the big island if you will, is where all the international banking goes on. After you deposit your ill gotten gain, you can go snorkelling with the stingrays, or cozy up to a beachside bar and drink away some of your interest.

For a nice tour of the Caymans, rent "The Firm." It's pretty accurate expect you won't be followed around by Wilford Brimley.

Our offshore fund is incorporated in the Cayman Islands so non-U.S. citizens can invest without being subject to U.S. income tax, which is eminently reasonable. Is my gain ill-gotten?

I've never said there was no such thing as fraud perpetrated by defense contractors. I just don't think these guys sit around saying, "Ooh, I'd sure love a war!!" and I don't think they play any part in the decision to actually go to war.

Chris, when you say "The Firm" is "accurate" about the Caymans, are you basing that on your extensive experience doing business in the Cayman Islands?

Dave,

Getting a bit defensive, don't you think?

WHAT ARE YOU HIDING!?!?

Anyhow, I don't think Ted was implying your gain was ill gotten, just that one could deposit their ill gotten gain before snorkeling. There's no question that putting money offshore allows for easier nefarious goings on, but that doesn't mean that everyone who does it is doing it is doing something wrong.

But only you know if YOUR gain is ill gotten.

I've never done any business that has involved the Cayman's in any way, nor have I been there, nor would I trust myself to find them on a map. Everything I know about the Cayman's is from movies like "The Firm". I thought the Wilford Brimley thing would be funny - the idea that everything in the "The Firm" is real except for him. Fortunately we have your sarcasm to make sure I explain myself.

I believe the $ at stake in a military-industrial society puts pressure on the state to wage war, and any company that benefits from this puts pressure on the state to be at war, directly or indirectly. Sometimes it's directly. It'll take a lot to convince me otherwise. That a company would then fuck over the US government and the Iraqi people to make a buck is just par for the course.

Chris -

You know how long it takes to melt down that gold and then clean it before I get paid?

I have zero doubt that there are economic pressures from the private sector that give men like George Bush and Dick Cheney - or LBJ - or King George III - decide on going to war. Economics is the only reason people go to war.

Proofreading is not now, nor has it ever been a factor in my own decisions on going to war.

FINALLY someone gets it.

Economics IS the only reason we go to war, and to deny this is to live in an alternate universe.
