His name is Ales Zivojinovich. Apparently, if you translate it literally (from Yugoslavian? something like that) it becomes "Lifeson". He didn't change his name and is still legally Alex Zivojinovich (his kids have that last name).
Ah, LeStudio...
It certainly does appear that they've got big panes of glass around the kit.
Indeed, right behind that glass is... a huge glass window overlooking the lovely Canadian countryside.
It does seem odd. What did the glass do to the sound? Nothing too bad, it seems. To me, the drums on "Permanent Waves" and "Moving Pictures" are incredible. They're also very tight (gated?), so perhaps any weird shit from the reflections isn't in there...
Behind Neil, on one of the walls, I think I spy a PZM taped up. another little engineer's trick. PZM's require a hard surface and exhibit no phase incoherence. They are also called "boundary mics".

Yeah, the OH's are super high.
A few things surprised me... how close together the overheads are, the fact that they're pointed straight down, and how cool the guys look.
Rush is cool.
Well, maybe not staight down.
The OH on the hi hat side is angled toward the outside of the kit.
Awesome pic.
Geddy was on a local radio station recently, great interview.
I never knew his real name is Gary, and Geddy became his nickname because that is how his grandmother pronounced Gary.
RUSH FUCKING ROCKS ASS! Thanks for posting that pic, now I'm listening to "All the World's a stage" - ahhhh live "lakeside park" and "2112".
Yep, Gary Lee Weinrib is his "real" name.
His grandmother called him Gary in a thick Yiddish accent... and Geddy's childhood friends picked up on it.
Alex's name isn't Lifeson either. It's something Slavic. Chrispy?
Am I crazy to be surprised to see all those glass panels behind the drum kit? Would that get a little annoying on the sound?
Our room can't handle the big stands - unfortunatley. I'd love to get more sturdy stands, but the drum riser won't accomodate them - too small.

Not Ales, Alex.
